Serenity on the Dunes

Serenity on the Dunes

About the project

‘Serenity on the Dunes’ was the design vision for this renovation, guided by a strong commitment to environmental responsibility and long-term sustainability. Retaining the existing building footprint (with only a modest single-garage addition) significantly reduced material consumption and site disturbance.

Material reuse included stainless-steel handrails that were refabricated, polished and reinstated to extend their lifecycle. Enhanced glazing to the north, east and west, along with three skylights, maximises natural light and passive solar gain and the home was insulated to a high standard, ensuring improved thermal performance and long-term efficiency.

Honouring its coastal surroundings the board-and-batten exterior, finished in a soft duck egg blue, evokes the charm of the classic Kiwi bach. Expansive kwila decking now wraps around three sides of the home, anchored by an electric louvre system that creates a sheltered yet open-air entertaining haven. A generous servery window from the designer kitchen, strengthens the home’s connection to its outdoor spaces and the sea beyond.

Inside, layered textures and finishes reflect the tones of sand and ocean. the reimagined staircase honours the home’s history, while the new upper level introduces light-filled bedrooms, a rumpus retreat and lift access. The main suite opens to views of Mayor and Motiti islands, offering a daily reminder of the exceptional seaside location.
